Hopkins Schools Summer Boiler
heightener
Location:
North and West Jr Highs, Alice Smith and Glen Lake Elementary
Owner: ISD 270
General Contractor:
Architect/Engineer: NewMech Design Build
Square Footage: Varies by school
Construction Cost: $370,000.00
Year Complete: 2007
Scope of Work:

• Remove and replace the 50 year old 1000 to 1500 gallon domestic storage tank with a steam heating bundle
• Replaced it with two or three Vitocell H-300 indirect fired hot water storage tanks. One tank will be piped to two Vitoden WB2-15-60 wall mounted condensing boilers
• The other one or two will be connected to the main steam boiler.

Highlights of Job
At each school the domestic hot water was being heated by the main steam boilers year round. This meant that even when there was no need for heating in the buildings the boilers would continue to run to provide domestic hot water. Now when the outside temperature is warm enough that comfort heating is not required the school personnel can shut off the steam boiler and startup the condensing boilers. At two schools we also provided for a small amount of reheat from the new boilers through a heat exchanger to temper the discharge of the that take in a large amount of outside air.
